Highlights & Happenings

Hey there lovely people! It has been almost 9 months of blogging for my little-blog-that-could, and I am SO grateful for all of you being so supportive and following all my adventures! I can hardly believe how the blog has grown in leaps and bounds thanks to you.
There is often so much going on behind the scenes that I don't get to share, and I think it is time to begin sharing a monthly update for all of you. This end of month post will review the last months posts & happenings, plus sneak peeks at projects I'm working on, and things that have inspired me that month.

Welcome to the first of many 'Highlights & Happenings' post! Well, we better get started, I have lots to catch you up on since I have to make up for 8 missed months! *mischievous grin* Nah I wouldn't do that to you, as promised in the title I'll just stick to a few highlights.

New & Improved Blog Page...
If you've been following along from the beginning or even the last few months you may have noticed little changes you couldn't quite put your finger on. Well, I'm trying to keep it as subtle as possible, but I am updating and creating a page you can easily navigate and enjoy!
The latest is the update to the new and improved House Tour page! As I gain steam on projects and rooms (although I have a feeling they will never be "complete"), I will add them to the House Tour page, and add all the associated links to projects from that room. In addition, you'll see new rollover links and descriptions on the 'Room by Room' page.

Guess Where Else You Can Find Me?!!
I have been so honored to have my projects featured over at Apartment Therapy, and RoadKill Rescue! I mean, Apartment Therapy...drool, and I'm such a fan of Beckie Farrants blogs, anyone who encourages others to turn trash into treasure is stink'in awesome.

Oh, and I just started exploring the wonderful world that is Houzz. So all you Houzz fans, be sure to follow along!

Projects I'm tackling this coming month...
I feel like I have a bad case of Decorating ADD. I float from one room to the next, and one project to the next without ever accomplishing any one room! Sure, I'll continually be improving things, even after they are "complete", but I think it's time I focused my attentions room by room. I hope you'll come along with me month by month as I tackle one space at a time!

In the month of September I'll be focusing on a small but much needed space, the coat closet. I want to get it done before cool Autumn weather comes a'knocking! Brace yourself for this before, because it. is. scary!
Have any suggestions for me? I'd love for you to link up your best inspiration this coming Monday, and if I use any of your suggestions (or just love them) I'll be sure to share them here on the blog.

Speaking of linky round-ups and parties... I haven't hosted too many of them and I want to remedy that. It's hard for me to "get out" and explore the web the way I want to. Every time I want a little inspiration on how to decorate or organize a room I end up spending hours searching through Pinterest! Am I the only one? I love to be "Pinspired" by all the incredible projects and content out there, but then I find myself wanting to share my finds with all of you here on the blog! So I'm introducing a new monthly link party entitled "Pinspired Projects". I'll share my online finds and inspirations by space/topic of the month, if you'll also share! I'd love to have all you makers of incredible pins (because that's what you lovely bloggers are!) link up your tutorials, inspirations, and makeovers. And for all you pinners of incredible pins (the lovely readers!), we will be able to enjoy inspiration by room in one place without hours of searching! Its a win-win! *wink* I'm getting this party started on Monday, so mark your calendars!

football starts tonight....are y'all die hard football people? i'm not going to lie, it does nothing for me. i have no problem however partaking in a good tailgating experience :) that being said, my husband is a football person and he has given his love for the game directly to my daughter....who sports orange very proudly. i hope y'all have a wonderful holiday weekend!!

OMG i've been away for way too long.....i have no excuse other then being a mother and getting back into the swing of things now that school is in. i hope to be here often now. i've missed my morning date w/ my coffee cup, desk, and computer. hope y'all have a great start to the week....

Princess Pink Bedroom Reveal

Well, you've been following my many projects for the 'Princess Pink Bedroom' this past month. I thought it was time I gave you a tour of the Princess Pink updates all together in one place!
Do you remember the initial Before & After? Scary before right? Lovely after! A great friend got it headed in the right direction with lots of beautiful DIY furnishings and some lovely decor ideas! I just needed to add a few updates to make the room flow with the rest of the house and reflect not only my munchkin's extra girly taste, but my taste as well! Don't judge me, I still have to live here! *chuckle*
This makeover would be an exercise in training my young'un in organized living in addition to beautifying her room. That meant decorating in a way that created easy access storage with a home for every item!

DRESSER UPDATE &
DUAL PIN & MAGNET BOARD
Can you believe this lovely updated dresser was once roadkill? Click here to read about it's transformation from ugly duckling to darling update.

I found this series of small plastic bowls at Target for $4. Who says kitchen goods have to stay in the kitchen? My munchkin needs lots of storage spaces to keep all her knick knacks, this worked perfectly atop her dresser.

I love this fabric, which I snagged while I had a 50% off coupon to JoAnns!! I used it for the pin board, and the leftovers I made a little throw pillow for her bed to repeat the pattern and feel. Learn how to make this dual Pin & Magnet board here, and how to pimp your push pins and magnets here.

SIDE TABLE
The side table (and the bookcase) were done in the same way (and the same time) as the dresser. Perhaps a little more distressed than the dresser, but accomplished through the same basic method, so I did not take the time to share the how-to. I wanted to show you the before and after so you could see what a simple piano bench with a little vision can be!

I shared the process of how to create these painted jars here. My artsy child can never have enough places to stash crayons and colored pencils!

BOOK SHELF & READING CORNER
Helping a child keep a bookcase clean and tidy is always a challenge, so I shared a few tips to help your little ones keep it organized here.

CLOSET MAKEOVER
I had fun with my daughters closet (in spite of the over abundance of pink!), and gave her just what she wanted.Of course, it was even more important to me to design it so that she would be able to keep it tidy and learn organization early in life!

So, what do you think? It feels like a LOT of pink to me, but that's what my very girly girl requested for her "Princess Pink bedroom", so I suppose I can live with it for now! *grin*

Easy DIY Painted Bottles

You know how much I love to reuse old jars. I use empty jars as storage in my office, in my bedroom, in my bathroom, and now in my daughter's bedroom!
After seeing how beautiful painted jars can be on Pinterest I whipped out my own paints and (true to Ursula style) began experimenting before reading the how. Lucky for me, this is kind of a dummy proof project! *chuckle* Now, you should know that I read more about it after-the-fact, and there are some differences...but in this case I'm happy with my head-first results, it was quick and easy, and created a tough enough finish to withstand my daughter's rough ways (that means no scratched paint!).
I'll show you how I did it (because you are smarter than me and read all the how-to's before jumping in head first...right?).

Here's what you'll need:

Pretty Glass Jars
Acrylic Paints
Paint Brush
Clear Protective Enamel Spray Paint

Start by making sure your jars are squeaky clean.

Next you need paint. Acrylic paints to be exact. For this project I used magenta tube paint leftovers from my artist dad, and mixed in an acrylic purchased for $2 from the art/fabric section of Walmart.

I confess that there was absolutely no skill to this. I just squirted the two paints into the bottom of the jar and mixed with a paint brush until I got the hue I was looking for.

Use your paint brush to drag the paint up the inside edges of the jar. Use enough paint to layer it on thickly so there aren't many brush strokes. You will see brush strokes from the inside, but judge your work from the outside...that's where it counts! Allow any remaining paint to swirl around jar covering lightly painted areas.

Each of my jars is a different ratio of the same two paint colors creating different hues. Allow them to dry (upside down to drip excess paint) overnight, and seal with a coat of clear enamel spray paint.

See, what did I say? Easy peasy DIY! Aaaah, I love the simple stuff!

Hip Hop Wallpaper

Hip Hop wallpaper websites let you download rap music artists, hip hop honeys, graffiti and celebrity photos and post them right on your desktop. These sites are everywhere, though which ones provide the best quality? Here's my list of where you can find hip hop wallpaper for your desktop.

Rap-Wallpapers. Unlike HHG, this website is all about hip hop wallpaper and features both mainstream artists such as Eminem, 50 Cent and Akon, as well as lesser known artists, hip hop models and rap album covers. The selection is huge.

Of course, you can also create your own hip hop wallpaper by searching for images of your favorite rap artists, then saving the image on your desktop. I change my wallpaper weekly (can't stand to stare at the same thing over and over again) and sometimes use my own photos or download ones from the sites mentioned above directly to my desktop. Whether it's graffiti, rap artists or celebrity photos, these are the sites!
