Menu Planner

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Minggu, 27 Januari 2013 0 komentar

The Eleventh Hour Cook
How? How is it that the entire day went by and I STILL don't know what to make for dinner? I find myself entering dangerously close to the "whine" line, where the kids pave the way for the dinner hour with complaints of hunger that grow increasingly more pathetic. Just as I enter that last half hour,  the kids rolling on the floor dramatically holding their little tummies, I frantically grab at the first box of what-ever-that-was to "whip up" something. Forty minutes later I am sighing with relief, as the kids and hubby wolf down their admittedly mediocre food, and I am safe for yet another day...until breakfast when I will do this dance all over again!
Nope, I don't want to do this forever...That's how I eventually came up with the perfect solution! I created an easily reusable Menu Planner, one that includes a much needed idea section.

Saving Solution
Yep, I can't decide if the worst part of cooking is the clean-up or the 2 hours before when you're racking your brain for ideas on what to cook. Well, no more sir! I'm not sure how to elude the monstrosity that is my kitchen after cooking (I'm a ridiculously messy cook), but I refuse to settle for menu mediocrity. So menu planning strategy it is! I have been employing this menu planner for a few months now and it has been my saving grace! We are eating healthier meals, it takes less time to prepare meals, I am saving gads of money, and we have culturally diversified our meals more than ever! It's a win-win-win-win!
Here are just a few menu planning tips you should employ to gain all of these benefits:
To save money: Pick one day to in advance to plan your meals. Create your menu and shopping list at the same time by browsing the sales ad's as well as your cupboard.
To save time: a menu plan gives you the opportunity to prepare entire meals or parts of a meal in advance, use a crock pot whenever you can. Do double duty by choosing meals that have a common ingredient and prepare (pre-cut, pre-soak, pre-wash, pre-cook, etc.) that ingredient all at one time for both dishes
To save your health: Try a new dish and a new seasoning every couple weeks. Keep the food pyramid in mind when menu planning, and include more fresh fruits and vegetables. If you need to, prepare your vegetables, and salads the week in advanced...you'll be more motivated to eat what has already been prepared.
To diversify: Try a new dish and a new seasoning every couple weeks. Glean inspiration from Pinterest Pins, or go online to a recipe directory such as allrecipes.com .

How It Works
Why sticky tabs? I like my menu planner to be tactile, and I am constantly changing my mind, or moving my meals around. This allows me to do so easily, without constant erasing or scratching out ideas. You would think these page marker sticky notes would lose their stickiness over time, as long as they are housed between two laminated sheets, they will not come off, or lose their stickiness.
The how to use is easy...besides the obvious grid/post-it operation, there are a couple little tricks I use to keep my menu planner working for me. The menu planner is divided into two parts: The Weekly Planner, which I reference to see what is being made for each week of the month. The Menu Ideas section, which is where I take from to populate my weekly meal plan.
First take the time to populate the Menu Ideas section. Go crazy, write on post-it page markers all the dishes you've ever wanted to make... the dishes that make you look like a superstar, the trusty dishes you cook weekly, etc. I went on Pinterest for inspiration and went wild!
Next glean dishes from your Menu Idea section to populate your Weekly Menu. This is also the time to make your shopping list.
You know , it is far easier to show than to tell: Watch my Youtube Menu Planner webisode to see how, and gain a few important details.

How to Make Your Own
Simple. Customize, print, laminate, punch holes, and start populating your menu planner!
I've done most of the work for you, but I won't take away the fun of personalization! Below you will find the Menu Planner printable in word format that you can download and customize, or in pdf format for those who want to print and use as is. Just remember, the word format will be a little discombobulated and needs to be downloaded to view and alter.
If you do not own a laminator, use Scotch brand full-sized self-laminating sheets, just follow the directions on the package.

Customization & Assembly Tips:
Type in Your Own Categories: My categories are: Drink Ideas, Salad & Appetizer Ideas, Breakfast Ideas, Lunch Ideas, Dinner Ideas, and Dessert Ideas. Use as many pages per category as you like. Decide your layout and page order, and place pages back to back so they will be double sided before laminating.
Type in Your Own Subcategories: My planner contains subcategories according to the way I plan and search for meals. Personally I think of my meals by predominant ingredient or meal base: Grains, Bread, Pasta, Potato, Vegetables & Legumes, and Sides.
A more "normal" labeling method would probably be: Appetizers, Bread, Pasta, Soup, Salad, Sides. Or perhaps label according to cultural food type: Asian, American, African, Indian, Italian, etc. The ideas are endless, the point is to divide up your sections according to the way you think.
Color-code Subcategories with Post-its: Keeping your subcategories further defined by using one or two colors in each section will make it quick and easy to put the stickies back in their place when not in use. Don't forget to customize your stickies too! I chose to use Post-it page marker signets, but I loved the adorable Martha Stewart brand 1 1/2" x 2" size as well!
Change the Font & Colors: While you're already customizing, why not make it suit your personal style? Whether you change the font, or the colors, or drastically change it, you'll be more motivated to use something you put a little work into.

Customizable Word Format (must be downloaded to be viewed properly)

Print Ready PDF Format

Creating an Organization Kit

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Selasa, 22 Januari 2013 0 komentar
We walk around with cleaning caddies, so why not one for organizing?
I found the perfect fishing tackle box by Rubbermaid, with all it's little crevices it makes an ideal place to store my organizing tools! I'm telling you, nothing else worked even half as well!

I keep my labels, label maker, and other odds and ends in the kit. And yes, I have to organize my organizer from time to time. Every time I do, I laugh and think of the TV series "Monk" when Mr. Monk vacuums his large vacuum with a hand vac and wishes aloud for an even smaller vacuum to clean that hand vac with!

Tools to Organize My Organizer  Don't you just love these stacking bead organizer jars? They help hold all the little odds and ends I keep in my Organization Kit. They screw onto each other making a tight seal, and hold more than a regular rectangular box organizer would. They hold labels, tacks, magnetic sticky strips, etc. I bought mine from Walmart for $3.00 each. The brand is called "Options".

I purchased embroidery thread containers from The Container Store to hold my large labels inside the Organization Kit. I was disappointed that they did not stay snapped shut when turned on their side, but since that is not what they were designed to do I can't really complain.

As an alternative to these containers, you could also use plastic bead containers with resizable compartments. Or use simple plastic baggies from the bead section! Your options are only limited by your imagination.

Organizational kits/caddies are very helpful when tackling a new space! Keeping basic organizing tools handy saves you time searching through the house. I highly recommend you take the time to create your own organization kit. It functions for more than just organizing. It is more like an organization/diy/craft/decorating kit all rolled up into one. After all, organizing is just as much about making a pretty space as it is about creating a well ordered and useful space!

Getting Your Own Organization Kit Together:
First things first, I recommend creating a list of items you plan to store in your kit. This will ensure when looking for your perfect kit that there will be a designated space for each item. My list consists of a few of the obvious items, as well as a few random items you never think you'll need while organizing or decorating, but I've discovered to be helpful. Your list might vary from my own, so add or subtract as necessary.

Organization Kit Items:
  • Label maker & label tape
  • Scissors, exacto knife
  • Permanent markers, dry erase markers
  • Colored pens and markers
  • Craft plastic bags (varying sizes)
  • Magnetic strips and rounds
  • Stick-on labels,hanging labels, file labels, etc.
  • Super glue & painters tape
  • Tacks (upholstry tacks, pinboard tacks, stylized tacks)
  • Adhesive strips (+removable), temporary adhesive putty
  • Various clips, & hooks
  • Safety pins
  • Furniture gliders
  • Single hole punch

Finding Your Perfect Kit: Once you have established your base list, you're ready to hit up the fishing section of your favorite superstore! Consider what types of materials are on your list. Will you be able to add smaller bins, or section off parts of the kit you are considering? Are there large, medium, and small compartments for storage? All these options available in a versatile fashion will make the ideal kit!
Then begin the process of stocking your kit, it may be over a course of years, figuring out which materials you use the most, which you can make do without.

Let me know how your organization kit turns out! Comment below, or tag HomeMadebyCarmona to the picture on facebook! I'd love to see!

Encourage Reading With The Perfect Nook

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Kamis, 17 Januari 2013 0 komentar
Every room should have a curl up, get cozy, never-wanna-get-up-again reading corner. I remember when I was a kid finding clever ways to hide so I could read without being caught and put to work... *chuckle* remember hiding an open book under a towel on the towel bar in the bathroom? Heh heh, I thought I was so clever, then one day I ran across my sister's book occupying my towel rack, and possibly my moms book?? Oh well.
It seems that between the television, internet, and video games we have ruined a generation for reading and imagination. My kids are always begging to watch this, or play that online "educational" game for school, what happened to the love of a great book? Educational content or not, my kids spend more than enough time online from school alone. I'm on a mission to give them the reading bug!

The "Curl Up" Spot
If I could put a lounge chair in every room I would! Unfortunately I am not rich, so no big bedroom space and no fancy chairs. But that shouldn't stop us from giving ourselves and our children some special little something to curl up in...whether it be the perfect rocker, or a large cushion, or a bunch of soft cushy throw pillows for the corner.
Thanks to the girls' "Aunty L", the Princess Pink bedroom has an awesome
Poang children's armchair from Ikea, and you wouldn't believe how comfortable it is! Who knew something so great could be assembled out of such a thin little box?

Proper Lighting
This detail should NOT be overlooked! It may not be as much fun as decorating or accessorizing, but we all know how necessary it is! Please, don't skimp on a nice bright lamp!
I allow my kids to get up early (with the sun!) rather than go to bed late, but I know many parents like to give their kids the privilege of a little extra time to read after lights-out time. And of course some kids will just sneak in a quick "read" regardless! For parents who want to encourage reading at all costs, at least consider leaving a little "night light" reading lamp, or an LED book clamp light in their reading corner.

Great Reading Materials
What is the use of creating the perfect reading area without having the perfect reading materials? I think it is important to strategically stock our kids bookcases. Keep easy/light reading right at their current reading level, as well as "challenge" books for them. We want our kids to be ever increasing the reading level of difficulty without our prodding. Sure, we do it for school, but why not let them venture out of their own accord without even realizing it?

Reading Nook Accessories
I love the faux fur that the girls aunt 'L' bought for the Princess Pink bedroom. With something so soft you just cozy up and never want to leave!
Consider a journal and a set of pretty ink pens for your kids to keep a "blog" of their thoughts on great reads.

Keeping It Organized
Kids bookcases are often a hot mess, especially if they have a sizable book collection! Simple items such as baskets, magazine holders, book caddies, or even bookends help keep those books wrangled. I don't clean my kids bedrooms for (and admittedly not even with) them, so keeping those bookcases tidy needs to be toddler easy!
Consider how you set up the books... sick and tired of them tumbling out of the shelf? It's just too difficult for our youngest ones to hold books upright while trying to jam the rest in... lay them face down in like stacks. My youngest knows that her coloring books go in one stack, her "church time" books in another, and big books in another. Simple, but easily kept on the shelf, and I'm teaching her basic organization tactics for her age. Other times, let's face it, you just need to streamline their bookshelf before it takes over the world like an evil villain!
