Vintage Fan Fake-out

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Senin, 29 Oktober 2012 0 komentar

As a general rule I hate fans, most of them are just plain 'ole ugly. Ugly ceiling fans, ugly table top fans, ugly floor fans, you name it, yeah we have it. Why? Because we're cheap, cheap cheap cheap. That means we don't tend to run the air conditioner in the summer, we just use our ceiling fan, or our small table top fan in our bedroom.
This particular white plastic fan was putting a real kink in my decor happy. A practical hand-me-down from the in-laws I was grateful for, of course. However its large amount of ugly just kept getting under my skin. There was no way the hubby would do without it those summer nights, and as tempted as I was to "accidentally" drop it down the stairs a few hundred times, my frugal self just wouldn't let me, neither would it let me replace it with some pricey but stylish vintage fan.
After staring cross eyed at my nemesis for what surely must be years I have decided to DO something about it. If I must have a fan, and I can't buy a nice vintage styled fan, then somehow I'm going to fake it!

Faking It With Spray Paint
I wasn't sure the style of this 90's horror fan would ever be cured, even by a coat of paint, but I had to try. First I carefully disassembled the offending fan, and removed the already broken cage permanently. Who needs a cage anyway? I'll just tell the hubby not to stick his fingers in the plastic blade (we may or may not have ever grown up). After removing the blade and backing, spray painting the fan was a cinch! I tried a dark hammered grey I wasn't happy with, then went with a mirror finish silver, and finally settled for the silver on the fan blades and this hammered golden brown on the base. It may not be a true vintage fan, but I'm much happier! It's probably as close as I'll ever get, and who would have thought that ugly white plastic thing could improve enough to become a part of my master bedroom decor? It's a spray paint miracle! *blissful sigh*

Laundry Room Before & After

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Kamis, 25 Oktober 2012 0 komentar
Mustard. Yes, I think of a big mustard stain when I look at my laundry wall. Not a pretty buttery yellow, just an unfortunate splotch of mustard...I feel this is just too ironic for a laundry roomFirst on my list of to-do's is a nice coat of paint. I love small rooms, it's a great opportunity to use colors you love but don't want to fill a whole room with. I have admired a dark greyish blue for many years, but I think it would be way too dark for a normal space. This is my chance!

These before pictures were taken while scouting this house as a potential buy. In truth all I have had time for is a good coat of paint, replacing the washer dryer set with my own front loaders, adding some much needed hooks for hanging, and just a few storage accessories
The final steps may be a while in coming... I want to do something with that big white door to the garage, and I would love to update those cabinet doors with frosted glass inserts and new hardware. Unfortunately I will need to acquire some skill and the proper tools to accomplish this! This calls for some research, maybe it will be a video "how-to" opportunity? At some point I would also like to take out that awful green office carpeting and put something akin to hardwood down. It will have to wait until the perfect flooring goes on sale (a really really great sale), or I stumble across just the right set waiting to be taken home from the Habitat for Humanity Resale shop. Wow, I can't wait! Well, this project has barely begun, but it is a step in the right direction. Isn't the power of paint amazing?

Hooks For Storage & Display

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Minggu, 21 Oktober 2012 0 komentar

"Display what you love most..." I read this in a home decor magazine and it really stuck with me. Instead of trying to create a "look" for your decor, just display the items you love... the things that most reflect you. Well, I don't know that my fedora collection reflects who I am, but I sure do love them! I wear them with much gusto, whether I pull it off or not! *unabashed gleeful grin* So I opted to "store" them on display. Plus I'm fond of a wall full of hooks.

Hooks are handy, they help keep things organized, and are a great way to display my favorite things.
I have seen entire walls outfitted with hooks for displaying decor items, however I opted to install a simple row of three vertical hooks to display wearable items near my closet. The idea is to be able to hang in layers the three main pieces of an outfit, preparing for an upcoming event or outing.

Changing Your Display
If I ever tire of seeing my wearable display, I can simply swap it out for some other fantastic hanging display. Might as well see a few of my things on the wall, and not just tucked away in my closet, right? That favorite scarf, a regularly used purse, my fedora collection... In addition, these items become quickly and easily accessible, making this display practical decor. During the week I might use my "everyday bag", but for church and special events I simply swap that purse for my "cute and compact" one on display, and presto my decor has changed. This makes your decor fluid, always replacing what is on the wall as you use it. It also makes for a seasonal display, as the things I wear or use regularly also change with the seasons.

This idea doesn't only work for the ladies, I have often used these hooks to lay out the hubby's suit for special occasions

Organizing LeHavre

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Kamis, 18 Oktober 2012 0 komentar
LeHavre was the very first Eurogame I set out to organize.
I am usually satisfied with placing pieces in mini craft bags, but setting up this particular game takes as long as the game itself! Well, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but those of you who play LeHavre know exactly what I'm talking about. I have been on the search for the perfect plastics to contain the pieces. Here is what I've come up with...
love these clear stack-able bead containers! You simply unscrew and place the containers directly on the game board, they fit in the spaces nicely, and hold the resources perfectly. The only rub is the containers fit better in the box in stacks of two's as opposed to laying on it's side in one large stack, so you will have to purchase extra covers. I purchased my containers at Walmart for $3 per 4 stack, but I know the Container Store also carries them online.

Creating Custom Tuck boxes:
I was like a kid in a candy store when the same friend who introduced us to Eurogames told us how to create custom tuck boxes for our games. He recommended this free tuck box generator to us. You provide the dimensions, and it provides the template. You can upload scans or pictures and design your boxes as you please. I opted to scan the back of one of the cards and add the desired text. I wanted my boxes to be a bit more sturdy than simply printing the template onto thin card stock, so I printed it onto an 8 1/2 x 11 full size shipping label, then adhered that to card stock too thick to go through my printer. A little superglue goes a long way to assemble sturdy card boxes. I suggest doing a practice version first to get the hang it and ensure you got your dimensions correct. The hubby organized and stored the cards by number of players, and a box for special buildings. It makes it significantly easier to set up since the cards are already divided, plus it no longer scares new players just watching the setup process!

Never Played LeHavre?
It would be considered a "heavier" Eurogame if you are used to playing gateway games such as the more popular "Settlers of Catan". The basic idea of the game is to "purchase" cards (buildings) that equal points at the end of the game and provide necessary resource functions throughout the game, the fun of the game is the process of collecting resources that allow you to make those purchases (not easy), and the challenge of having to feed increasing each round. I personally enjoy LeHavre's dynamics, I love worker placement, and I like that there are so many strategic directions one can go. I find that the game play satisfies me, even if I do not win. If you are a fan of other Rosenberg games, this one is right up there with his best!

Warranty & Manual Storage

Posted by sew4tejhtr6ier Minggu, 14 Oktober 2012 0 komentar
I fear my office space. Seriously, I think my mountain of papers are out to get me. I've decided to take this task one small project at a time, or maybe I'll just leave the boxes of mystery papers on my husbands doorstep with a note and run away (metaphorically speaking of course, as we share a doorstep...).

My first project will be to organize my warranties and manuals... well, reorganize since my first attempt failed miserably. For a while I stored them in a binder with clear sheet protectors. The Problem: heavier manuals began to weigh the sheet protectors down and they would sag below the binder.  Eventually I could not fit anything more into the binder, or the second binder, and I refused to buy a third, there had to be a better solution!

After testing several different methods, I discovered that using a simple accordion file worked best for my needs. This bad boy holds the thickest manuals manufacturers can throw at me! Not to mention that it was the most inexpensive option I could find. I have seen some very snazzy binder methods, but when I went to purchase all the specialty inserts and miscellaneous items I needed, I quickly realized that the entire endeavor would be pretty pricey. I went home empty-handed dreaming up ways to make this work.

Not only have I found a system that works, I have also discovered a few tricks to store things in the most effective way possible.
Sometimes it is the simplest things... A few leftover photo album refill pages, some craft baggies, and the old sheet protectors help keep my accordion filing system neat and tidy. There is just nothing more satisfying than seeing a well organized item with rows of labels!

Some things are just best shown:
I hope this little tour of my warranty & user guide filing system is helpful.
